New ways against Drugs and Mafia

Gang related crime in connection with drugs and guns are responsible for most murders in Trinidad and Tobago. Armed robberies, kidnapping and further criminal activities are also to be associated with gangs and drugs. Drug addicts need a certain amount of cash to pay for their drugs. Smaller drug dealers and drug addicts are the ones who get caught and are seen in court for being in possession with a few grams of Marihuana ensuring that Magistrates have to deal with much too many cases each day. But gang leaders and drug lords hardly ever end up in court as they are protected by corrupted lawyers, members of the police force and politicians. Corruption and bribe is part of human culture just like addictive behavior for alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, working or eating. The drug business is extremely lucrative and especially persons with hidden secrets, unfulfilled financial demands, low self esteem and a weak character are easy targets to support the drug business in an active or passive manner.

One necessary step is to follow American and Italian lawmakers in their anti-gang and anti-drug legislation to make it a crime to be part of a gang or any other criminal organization and to give the state the right to confiscate Mafia-property. So people could go to jail just for being a member of a gang. This would prevent these persons from committing more crime. Another step would be the Dutch approach to decriminalize drug addicts. Drug addicts are rather to be seen as sick people like people who have pneumonia or cancer. Drugs destroy peoples minds and bodies, drugs can destroy families and lead peaceful people into crime. European countries make good experiences in giving drug addicts their drug-substitute at a controlled state office for free. A light drug like Marihuana can be bought legal in small portions in the Netherlands and the possession of a few grams for personal use does not have to be prosecuted in many European countries. It is the dealing which has to be criminalized - not the personal use of a drug.

If inhabitants of T+T could grow their own Marihuana in their garden, there would be no need for them to pay any gang or drug lord for the wanted drug. However, it would be very important, that marihuana would only be planted for personal use - trading for profit strictly forbidden! A more liberal drug policy has to be in connection with an even better education of children, the youth and the whole population about the negative effects of all kind of drugs. Drivers on the road and workers in important positions have to be tested not only against alcohol for killing innocent people on the road but also against different kinds of drugs like marihuana and other dangerous substances. Organized crime (Mafia), corruption, drugs and gangs are main problems in this countries. For our children: There is a need for new ideas and strategies and people with heart and courage to fight this fight!
